Mindfulness and Unity at Obama’s Historic Inauguration

A Mindful Celebration of Diversity

Last week, Mindful Publisher Jim Gimian and I attended President Obama’s second inauguration as guests of Representative Tim Ryan, author of A Mindful Nation. The event—held on Martin Luther King Day—marked 50 years since Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech, creating a profound moment of reflection on unity and progress.

Key Themes of the Inauguration

President Obama’s address and Richard Blanco’s inaugural poem echoed core mindfulness principles:

  • Unity in Diversity: "E pluribus unum" (out of many, one) reflects how individuality thrives within a collective whole.
  • Interdependence: Dr. King’s idea that "our freedom is bound to every soul on Earth" aligns with mindful awareness of connection.
  • Citizenship Over Consumerism: The speech emphasized "citizens"—not just taxpayers or consumers—highlighting shared responsibility.

Memorable Moments

  • The crowd of nearly a million people stretching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial.
  • Blanco’s poetic imagery ("one sun…one ground…one sky") visualizing interconnectedness.
  • Obama’s closing phrase: "solemn duty and awesome joy," defining mindful citizenship.

Why This Matters for Mindfulness

The inauguration reminded us that:

  1. Mindfulness fosters unity without erasing differences.
  2. Language shapes identity—terms like "citizen" inspire broader engagement than "consumer."
  3. Nature and shared rituals (like Blanco’s "moon tapping on every rooftop") ground us in common humanity.

Final Reflection

As Blanco’s poem affirmed, the space connecting us isn’t distant—it’s "right at our fingertips." Mindfulness helps us reach for it, together.
