Mindfulness for Gun Violence Survivors: Healing Trauma

How Mindfulness Helps Gun Violence Survivors Heal

The Trauma of Losing a Child to Gun Violence

Sandy Phillips experienced unimaginable trauma when her daughter Jessi was killed in the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting. Like many survivors of gun violence, she struggled with:

  • Intrusive thoughts reliving the event
  • Severe sleep disturbances
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Complex PTSD symptoms

"I couldn't wrap my heart or my brain around what happened," Sandy recalls. "My mind kept returning to that theater."

The Healing Power of Trauma Therapy

Working with a trauma therapist introduced Sandy to essential recovery tools:

  1. Breathwork techniques to calm the nervous system
  2. Mindfulness practices to stay present
  3. Grounding exercises to manage flashbacks

These evidence-based approaches helped Sandy process her grief in healthier ways.

Creating Survivors Empowered: A National Support Network

After Jessi's death, Sandy and her husband Lonnie made it their mission to help other gun violence survivors. Their nonprofit Survivors Empowered now provides:

  • Peer support networks
  • Trauma-informed resources
  • Mindfulness training programs
  • Community healing retreats

Mindfulness Retreats for Mass Shooting Survivors

Partnering with meditation teacher Shelly Tygielski, Sandy organized transformative retreats featuring:

  • Guided meditation sessions
  • Group therapy circles
  • Stress reduction techniques
  • Community bonding activities

"You could see participants become lighter," Sandy observes. "No one left unchanged."

The UCSD Mindfulness Research Initiative

The University of California San Diego is studying mindfulness interventions for gun violence trauma. Their program includes:

  • 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses
  • Virtual training accessible nationwide
  • Certification for community healing work

"This will change how survivors process grief," says Sandy.

Why Mindfulness Works for Trauma Recovery

Research shows mindfulness helps trauma survivors by:

  • Reducing PTSD symptoms
  • Lowering stress hormone levels
  • Improving emotional regulation
  • Creating space between triggers and reactions

Building a Movement for Healing

Sandy envisions mindfulness creating ripple effects:

  • Training survivors as "violence interrupters"
  • Establishing community healing centers
  • Changing national conversations about trauma

"We're showing life can still be good after loss," Sandy reflects. "There's always a hole, but also joy and peace."
